what is valacyclovir and how does it work?
valacyclovir is an antiviral suppressive approved by the FDA to treat herpes simplex, also known as HSV-1. valacyclovir works by blocking the virus' polymerase enzyme. by doing so, the medicine is able to stop the HSV-1 virus from building DNA and replicating itself inside of you. this reduces the severity of your cold sores and flare-ups, as well as the ability for the virus to transfer between hosts. the active ingredient in valacyclovir is valacyclovir hydrochloride. cold sores are blisters most often found on or around the mouth caused by the herpes simplex virus, also known as HSV-1.
what is herpes?
herpes is an infection caused by HSV (herpes simplex virus). herpes simplex virus affects the external genitalia, anal region, mucosal surfaces, and skin in other parts of the body.
is this safe/what are the side effects?
yes, valacyclovir is safe. side effects may include headache, dizziness, nausea, stomach pain, or vomiting. it is important to stay well hydrated while taking valacyclovir to avoid these symptoms. if any of these side effects persist or worsen, please contact your doctor.
can I use this for genital herpes?
though this antiviral drug can be prescribed for genital herpes, our treatment plan is intended only for Oral Herpes, HSV-1.
i already have an active lesion / outbreak. will this work?
valacyclovir works best when taken at the first signs of a cold sore -- when you feel that tingly, itching, blistering or burning in or around the mouth. valacyclovir can be used if you already have a cold sore, but it is not as effective as when taken at the first signs of your flare up. since valtrex is a prescription medication, after you place your order you will be prompted to complete a medical assessment which will be reviewed by a doctor. From there they will let you know if they recommend valtrex. you can find more info about our medical advisors and care delivery here.
how often will my prescription be shipped to me?
after your doctor has written your prescription, you'll receive treatment in 5-7 days. your shipment will include enough for one treatment as well as a backup treatment so you are always prepared. we'll send you another refill in 3 months so no matter what - in the office, on the road, in your gym bag - you'll be covered.
